Description
Five Finger Islands Light was one of Alaska’s first two lights, along with Sentinel Island Light. In 1933, there was a spat of cold weather that caused the light's pipes to freeze. The keepers attempted to remedy the problem by using a blowtorch to warm the pipes, but it unfortunately resulted in a fire that burned the light to the ground. The new light was built nearly fireproof so that history would hopefully not repeat itself. The last Coast Guard crew left the light on August 14, 1984, causing Five Finger Islands Light to be the last Alaskan light to be automated.
This light is accesible by boat only; Auke Bay Landing Craft and Excavation charters trips to both Five Finger Islands Light and Sentinel Island Light - visit them at aukebaylandingcraft.com.
