Description
The first tower was built in 1833 but was deemed too short and not in the best location. It was taken apart and move over to the cape of the Island. Four years later a hurricane knocked down the tower and a new one was built. The new tower had 2/3 of the bricks from the old tower. October 21, 2005 before the lighthouse could be moved to a safer location, it fell, however, St. George Lighthouse Association has recovered about 95% of the material and it will be rebuilt on the main island.
You can now see the restored lantern room on St George Island at the County Park. Soon a roof will be added.
UPDATE from ericlighthouse: Lighthouse has now been re-built and can be climbed. Re-located to the bigger part of the island, so now you can drive to it.
