Description
The present Cape Canaveral Lighthouse is the third light built on this cape. The shallow waters off the cape prompted the construction of the first lighthouse in 1848. The present 150 foot tower was built in 1868.
The lighthouse is day marked with black and white bands with a black lantern room. The first order Fresnel lens originally installed in the lantern room was disassembled and moved to a permanent display at Ponce de Leon Inlet light station to prevent damage from vibration due to rocket launches from the Air Force station.
