Description
Spectacle Reef Lighthouse is located 10.7 miles east of Bois Blanc Island. The lighthouse was completed in 1874; its foundation sits 11 feet beneath the surface of Lake Huron. A crib 92 feet square and 24 feet high was built on the site and the foundation of the lighthouse sits on bedrock on the bottom of the lake.
The lighthouse is a conical limestone structure 93 feet tall and 32 feet in diameter at the base. The surface of the limestone crib is 12 feet above the mean lake level.
Spectacle Reef is named for the shape of the reef it stands atop, which from above looks like a pair of glasses or spectacles beneath the waters of Lake Huron.
The lighthouse had a 2nd order Henry-Lepaute Fresnel lens in the lantern room which is now on display in the Inland Seas Museum in Vermillion, Ohio. The lighthouse is automated and still in service with a modern optic that flashes white and red at 60 second intervals that is visible for 17 miles.
