Description
A dangerous reef lies in western Long Island Sound astride which the Stepping Stones lighthouse was built in 1874-75, the light from its 5th order Fresnel lens exhibited for the first time in 1875.
The lighthouse has a 46' square red brick tower integrated into the keeper's dwelling.
The lighthouse is still owned by the USCG but has been put up for transfer. Applications for ownership by the town of North Hempstead and five non-profit organizations are still being evaluated.
