Description
A lighthouse was established on Straitsmouth Island in 1835. The present tower was built in 1896 and is a circular brick tower reached from the keeper's house via a wood walkway. The gothic keeper's house was built in 1878 and has sadly deteriorated to the point that it is now near collapse.
The Straitsmouth Island Lighthouse was recently deeded to the town of Rockport by the USCG. The town has an agreement with the Thacher Island Assoc. who will maintain the Straitsmouth Island light. The MA Audubon Society, who owns Straitsmouth Island, which is a bird sanctuary, has granted the association an easement to allow access to the light. There will not likely be any public access to the light, however.
The lighthouse is not too distant from the Thacher Island twin lights, both of which are now lighted, as can be seen in one of the posted photos.
