Description
Point Montara Lighthouse perches above the Pacific Ocean about 25 miles south of San Francisco along the Cabrillo Highway aka US 1. The drive south from San Francisco along the coast to Half Moon Bay or all the way to Pigeon Point is spectacular and not to be missed! The coast highway has to be one of my favorite drives in the US!
The lighthouse at Point Montara was established in 1875 and received a 4th order Fresnel lens in 1912. The present tower was built in 1928 and automated in 1970.
When you visit Point Montara, be sure to take the time to walk the site and walk through the fence on the far end of the grounds from the entrance drive for some spectacular views of the light looking south.
