Description
Because of shipping on Lake Erie and the importance of Cleveland as a port, there have been a number of lighthouses built on the Cleveland waterfront. The Cleveland Harbor West Pierhead Light stands atop a detached breakwater at the west end. The lighthouse was built in 1911 and was originally quipped with a 4th order Fresnel lens that served for 30 more years beyond the automation of the light in 1965. The lens was removed and replaced by a modern optic; the lens can now be viewed in the Great Lakes Science Center (http://www.glsc.org).
Distant views of the lighthouse (the photos posted were shot from this location at a focal length of 900 mm) can be had from the parking lot at the end of E 9th Street in Cleveland at the waterfront ($8 to park). The best views are from the water on the Goodtime III, which departs from the same parking lot.
