Description
The Charlotte-Genesee Lighthouse was built in 1822 but the river has been used as a thoroughfare by the Seneca nation since the 1500's. The original 40 foot tower was topped with an octagonal cast iron lantern room. In 1853 a replacement 10-sided lantern room and a 4th order Fresnel lens were placed atop the tower, with a new keeper's residence added in 1863. The lens was removed in 1881 and placed on a cast iron tower on the pier at the lakeshore. The lantern room was removed three years later and installed atop a wooden beacon on the new west pier.
The lighthouse has since been completely and beautifully restored and is now owned by Monroe County and leased to the Historical Society who operates and maintains the light and opens the light for tours during the summer (see below).
