In the middle of Atlantic City's casino and hotel highrises stands a testament to the past - Absecon Lighthouse. Even though it's nowhere near the tallest thing in AC anymore, it's still (supposedly) the tallest lighthouse in NJ, and it is quite imposing.
The light stands in the middle of what would not be considered the best area of AC - lock your car just in case. But once you get inside the tall metal fence that surrounds the lighthouse property, it's an entirely different world.
The tower is entered through the keeper's house, which was torn down at some point, replicated in 1998, arsoned, and replicated again in 2002. Though there's a bit of a "new" feeling to it (perfect sheetrock and shiny hardwood floors), it's still a nice access point to the tower.
The tower's another tall climb - and if you've climbed Barnegat or Cape May, it may be familiar - all three towers were designed by Gen. George Meade, who would become known as a Civil War hero. However, the top is crowned by something no other NJ light has - an original 1st order Fresnel lens.
Overall, a pretty cool light in an oasis amongst Trump and aparments. It's worth the visit for the lens, the long climb, and the fact that it's stuck in the middle of AC.
