Description
Passage Island lighthouse on Passage Island is located approx. 3.4 miles north east of the easternmost tip of Isle Royale. The lighthouse originally had an oil lamp in a 4th order Fresnel lens. In 1928, the lighthouse was electrified. In 1989 when the lighthouse was fully automated, the USCG removed the Fresnel lens, replacing it by a 190 mm acrylic optic. The lens was transported to the Portage Coast Guard Station where it was placed on display in the station's lobby. The lighthouse is still an active aid to navigation (ATN) and it is now part of Isle Royale National Park. Tours to Passage Island are available from Isle Royale in the summer on Mondays and Fridays.
