Description
Isle Royale lighthouse on Menagerie Island marks the entrance to Siskiwit Bay on Isle Royale, which provides a harbor of refuge during the fierce storms that sweep Lake Superior. Menagerie Island is one of the many islands that comprise the Isle Royale archipelago. The island was named in honor of a former lighthouse keeper, John Malone who had a "menagerie" of 11 children, one of whom succeeded him at Isle Royale lighthouse as the keeper. The lighthouse is fitted with heavy, solid cast iron shutters that completely cover the windows, serving to protect the windows from being smashed by storm-driven waves that frequently swept completely over the island.
