Description
Seventy miles west of Key West. Is part of the tortugas national park. Walls made of bricks from Pensicola, FL. 203 stairs of granite. Had a first order frensel lens that could be seen for 20 miles. In 1893 red glass panels were added. 1909 the Fresnel lens was replaced with a revolving 2nd order bivalve or clamshell ground glass lens. Sometimes the island is open for a visit, but there is a waiting list. Only accessible by boat and the dock there is for government use only. The island is usually closed due to the fact sea turtles nest there. Ususally best seen from the Garden Key which houses the fort and other lighthouse.
