Description
Ship Island Light was the third of three towers in its location. The first was a 45-foot brick tower built in 1853, the second was a square wooden tower in a pyramidal shape that was built in 1886 and lost to a fire in 1972. The third, which was the present standing tower was a replica of the 2nd light. Unfortunately, the replica that had been built in 2000 was destroyed in Hurricane Katrina on August 29 of 2005.
